“When I coached high school football for two years, it really wasn’t on my radar. My dad did it for many, many, many years, (but) I thought, ‘I just don’t have anything left in the tank from a competitive side. What type of coach would I be?’ I always thought I would be a good coach, but I didn’t know if I had the effort in me. Well, I did. I’ll tell you what, it was a joy. The competitive spirit came right back. It was obviously different than playing, and so I had a lot of fun.
Before the Panthers came to town, Miami didn’t have much of a history with hockey (which makes sense because what in hell is hockey and why does it need to be played in a subtropical climate?), but back in 1972 there was an attempt to bring pro hockey to South Florida. The now defunct World Hockey Association almost iced a Miami team in 1972. They wouldn’t have played in Miami, though. The Hollywood Sportatorium was built in Broward to host the team, but management didn’t like the arena. The team eventually took to the ice as the Philadelphia Blazers. They were the same team, in fact the WHA2’s and they were one of the biggest disasters in Miami sports history. In 2003, the team played in the Miami Arena, but no one went to see them. Well, almost no one. Fearing low attendance, the ownership attempted to move to Maitland, Florida. Players didn’t like official nfl football jerseys the idea. Wide receivers have average careers of 2.81 years. Kickers and punters have the longest careers, averaging 4.87 years. Many players hold out for larger payouts arguing that they have only a short amount of time to make money in the NFL. The exception to this is quarterbacks. They tend to make among the highest salaries while still having longer careers. Always prided myself on being able to get along with anybody, whether they are a major donor or someone who comes to one game a year. San Francisco has all sorts of salary cap space to accommodate a new deal for Hyde, but the Shanahans father and son have gotten great mileage in past from unheralded and inexpensive runners. Part of the reason for that, of course, is Decker has already proved to be a terrific pro left tackle. He played every snap last season, locked horns with some of the best edge rushers in the NFL, and walked away having allowed just 4.5 sacks. Not bad for his first tour through the league.
In contrast to the National Football League rugged and fierce play, often in the most severe climates, the Arena Football League is fast paced and played exclusively indoors. Other differences include the NFL 32 teams vs. the AFL 18 teams, and the former fall/winter schedule vs. the latter spring/summer season (from March to July). The levels of pay are also different. Coaches in the Arena Football League do not receive the multimillion dollar yearly salaries that NFL coaches do.
